Donald Trump No Longer ‘Fired,’ Will Keep ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ EP Title at NBC
Donald Trump seemed to be on the receiving end of his own catchphrase — you’re fired — when NBC announced in June 2015 it was ending a partnership with the President-elect in light of racist remarks. But sources close to The Apprentice tell Deadline Trump’s pink slip may have been prematurely issued.
Though Trump’s show credit is not currently public, the site reports that Trump will indeed remain an executive producer on Celebrity Apprentice, which he hosted for seven seasons between 2008 and February 2015. Variety adds Trump — who will be inaugurated in January — will not actively participate in the show’s production. Either way, it is unprecedented for a president to be on a TV show’s payroll.
Arnold Schwarzenegger will host New Celebrity Apprentice, which premieres in NBC in January.
The move seems to contradict NBC’s June 2015 dismissal of Trump and a corresponding statement from the company that Trump’s racist remarks against Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were inexcusable.
“Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” the company wrote after more than 200,000 signed a Change.org petition calling on the network to dump Trump.
