Researchers at M.I.T. have created a new device that could help farmers scientifically pinpoint the freshness of some foods.

It’s a hand held spectrometer that connects to a smartphone. Larry Greenmieyer is an Editor with Scientific American,

“Usually these things are pretty expensive, they’re big and bulky and you use them primarily in labs.”

How the new device works is it measures and analyzes light, which can then, for example, let the farmer know exactly when their crop is most ripe.

Greenmieyer says the hope is that the device could one day help farmers cut down on the amount of wasted product.
